On October 24th, 2022, U.S. Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield announced an exciting new initiative: the UNA-USA Fellowship. A first-of-its-kind scholarship, it provides financial support for American undergraduates and recent graduates who have secured unpaid internships with the United Nations.
If you are in the process of applying for a UN internship, please explore eligibility requirements for our new UNA-USA Fellowship by reviewing the FAQ below. Recognizing American undergraduates and recent grads in unpaid internships with the UN, this initiative aims to offset your internship expenses so you can keep on making the world a better place.
And because we’re committed to reflecting the rich diversity of the global audiences we serve, we’re especially excited to welcome individuals from underrepresented communities and HBCUs.
UNA-USA Fellowships enhance the UN internship experience through:
The UNA-USA Fellowship is made possible by its partners, Schmidt Futures, a philanthropic initiative of Eric and Wendy Schmidt that identifies exceptional people and looks for hidden brilliance around the world to solve the hardest problems in science and society, and the Eleanor Crook Foundation.
UNA-USA welcomes additional partners that want to sustain the program and grow a pipeline of Americans with new and different perspectives and fresh ideas at the United Nations.
Please contact Mr. Troy Wolfe, Senior Director, Partnerships & Special Initiatives at twolfe@unausa.org for any questions regarding the UNA-USA Fellowship.
We encourage you to apply for the fellowship during your UN application process. UNA-USA reserves the right to review applicants following confirmation of internship and makes no guarantee that an applicant will receive a fellowship. Awards are based on eligibility requirements and the availability of funding. And while there’s no hard deadline, we encourage you to apply at least four months prior to the start of your internship program. Once accepted as a fellow, you’ll receive a stipend to cover up to four months of living expenses during the internship. And yes; that means any living expenses – from utilities and rent to food and transportation. All stipends are yours to spend at your own discretion.
