The School of International Service (SIS) at American University (AU) invites applications for a full-time, one-year Korea in Global Affairs Postdoctoral Fellowship for scholars who have received their Ph.D. in the past five years. The position begins on August 1, 2023, with the possibility of renewal for a second year.

We welcome applicants who conduct interdisciplinary research on Korea in broad global historical, political, cultural, economic, and/or sociological perspective. Preference will be given to applicants whose work seeks to illuminate the Korean experience in the context of the country’s broad web of relations with other global actors, while producing knowledge that can help tackle pressing global problems today.

The postdoctoral fellow should reside in the D.C. metropolitan area and be an active participant in SIS’ vibrant intellectual community. The successful candidate will be enthusiastic about working with Professor Ji- Young Lee, the C.W. Lim and Korea Foundation Professor of Korean Studies, to expand and enhance AU’s Korean Studies in DC and globally. Other fellowship expectations include:

-Make progress in revising their doctoral dissertation for publication;
-Help to plan and organize an international conference on Korea during the fellowship period;
-Plan and help to execute a proposal for an edited volume or special journal issue based on contributions to the international conference.

Candidates should be enthusiastic about working in a multidisciplinary environment that includes political scientists, geographers, sociologists, anthropologists, economists, historians, and international relations scholars. Candidates should also share a commitment to the university’s Inclusive Excellence plan.

Applicants should hold a PhD or the highest equivalent degree in a social science or humanities discipline by the start date. Annual salary: $65,000. Review of applications will begin in mid-June 2023 and will continue until the position is filled.
