Profile
Hyuk-Rae Kim is Professor of Korean Studies at the Graduate School of International Studies, Yonsei University in Korea. He received his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Washington. He was Director of Institute for Modern Korean Studies and lectured at the following institutions: SciencesPo in Paris as Endowed Chair Professor of Korean Studies in 2010, University of Oregon as Fulbright Professor in 2003, and Williams College as Adjunct Professor in 1999. He is Series Editor-in-Chief of Routledge Studies on Modern Korea and also sits on the editorial boards of numerous international academic journals. His research interests are in Korean society, East Asian economic/social governance, civil society and NGOs, and research methodology. His recent publications include the edited volumes of Politics and Markets in the Wake of the Asian Crisis (Routledge); Korean Studies Forum Vol. 1-4 (Yonsei University Press), Mad Technology: How East Asian Companies are Defending their Technological Advantages (Palgrave), and Modern Korean Society: Its Development and Prospect (IEAS, UC Berkeley). He edited special journal issues on Globalization and Socio-Cultural Changes in Comparative Perspective (2004) and on Civil Society and Consolidating Democracy in Comparative Perspective (2006). He also published numerous book chapters and journal articles. His current research focuses on civil society, migration, and multiculturalism, including ¡°Contentious Politics in the Nascent Formation of Ethnic Communities in Korea¡± (2017), ¡°Contested Governance in the Making of Multicultural Societies: Labor Migration and International Marriages in South Korea¡± (2017), ¡°Foreigners Cometh!: Paths to Multiculturalism in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan¡± (2012), and ¡°Migration and Multicultural Contention in East Asia¡± (2011)and His recent book is ¡°State-centric to Contested Social Governance in South Korea¡± by Routledge in 2013.
