The GSIS Ph.D. Committee is the primary body responsible for overseeing the Ph.D. program at GSIS. Currently, the Ph.D. Committee is chaired by the Dean with the participation of the Associate Dean and program chairs as designated members. The committee reviews the entrance qualifications, Ph.D. curriculum, research and internship programs, academic requirements (including the written and oral components of the Ph.D. candidacy qualifying examination), relevant scholarships, student relations, and other related regulations. The Ph.D. Committee meets at the discretion of the chair or at the behest of the Dean.
Korean Studies [Ph.D. in Korean Studies]
The Ph.D. program in Korean Studies is designed to address the diverse professional and academic objectives of today's students. This program offers an interdisciplinary curriculum combining history, sociology, and political science. Admission to the program is competitive and limited to candidates with an M.A. degree in humanities and social sciences.
The curriculum encompasses the two fields of the Korean Studies Program: 1) Korean History, Society & Culture 2) Korean Politics and Economy. To fulfill all requirements for a Ph.D., a student must complete all course requirements (48 credit units) that include five courses from each field. Those with a grade point average of over 3.0 can move on to write a substantial dissertation following a comprehensive examination. The dissertation must make an original contribution to scholarship in the field of Korean Studies. Students can be given up to 24 credits units and certain required courses can be waived with permission.
International Cooperation [Ph.D. in International Studies] (International Relations)
The Ph.D. program is intended for scholars and professionals with career interests in either academic or policymaking careers requiring advanced knowledge of diverse disciplines including political science, economics and public policy. It is appropriate only for a small number of students with career interests in research and teaching as well as public policy. In addition to the above-mentioned disciplines, Ph.D. candidates must demonstrate proficiency in analytical methods, empirical methods, foreign language, and a chosen field of concentration prior to graduation. Admission to the program requires an M.A. degree from a recognized graduate program.
To fulfill all requirements for a Ph.D., candidates must complete all course requirements (48 credit units) that include 10 courses from two chosen field. Candidates must maintain a grade point average over 3.0 and pass a qualifying examination in order to write a dissertation. The dissertation must make an original contribution to scholarship in the field of international relations. Students can be given up to 24 credit units and petition to waive the required courses.
International Trade & Finance [Ph.D. in International Studies] (International Political Economy)
The Ph.D. program is designed to address the diverse professional and academic objectives of those exceptional candidates interested in pursuing in-depth research into an aspect of international political economy. The Ph.D. program offers an interdisciplinary curriculum combined with political science, economics, finance and trade. Admission to the program is limited to candidates with advanced knowledge in one of these disciplines and an M.A. degree.
A Ph.D. candidate must complete a total of 48 credit units including various required courses and at least five elective courses from each of the two fields in the Program. Students can have their credits transferred, up to a maximum of 24 credits and wave, with permission, required courses.
International Management [Ph.D. in Strategy & Organization]
The International Management Program (IMP) emphasizes the ways in which private corporations conduct their international business in various political, economic, cultural and social environments. In particular, students are required to have a basic understanding in related fields such as international trade and finance, international security, development cooperation, area studies or Korean studies. While in the program, students develop an understanding of how economic and business factors interact in shaping the management environment.
Degree Requirements
- 48 credits
- A minimum GPA of 3.00 or above
- Completion of GSIS core courses (passed or waived)
- Completion of the Independent Study
- Completion of the Field of Concentration: Choose two (2) fields under your major and take five (5) courses from each field
- Two years (i.e. four semesters) of full-time enrollment
- Completion of requirements within 14 semesters
- Completion of the Foreign Language Examination
- Completion of the Comprehensive Examination
- Completion of a Doctoral Dissertation and Oral Defense
- Article publication in a journal which is recognized as a top rated journal by the Korea Research Foundation or any equivalent journal
